The Livonia Public Schools Board of Education is among a small handful of school boards across the state of Michigan to be named a Michigan Association of School Boards Honor Board.

Led by President Mark Johnson, the seven-member elected board consists of Vice President Colleen Burton, Secretary Tammy Bonifield and Trustees Dan Centers, Liz Jarvis, Karen Bradford and Crystal Frank.

To be named an Honor Board, all members must have completed the course works to earn at least a Level 1 certification from the MASB. The LPS school board achieved this milestone after newcomers Karen Bradford and Crystal Frank earned their Level 1 certification during their first year of service on the Board. Trustee Liz Jarvis recently completed additional course work to earn the Award of Merit.

The LPS Board of Education is among 16 boards, out of 587 statewide, to be named an Honor Board this school year.

President Johnson notes that Level 1 certification is only the beginning.

“Our board members have gone well above and beyond, and will continue as long as we are board members,” said Johnson. “We are in the business of educating, and it doesn’t stop with the children – it continues with us. I want to thank all of my colleagues for their efforts. It is a lot of time, and it’s a lot of dedication and I appreciate it.”

The MASB Board Member Awards Program was established in 1990 with the goal of enhancing the ability of local school boards to improve Michigan public schools and the achievement levels of the state’s 1.5 million students.

Locally, Superintendent Andrea Oquist said she is proud of the time and dedication that each member of the Board has committed to their role as a board member.

“Beyond the professional development to which our board is so committed, they commit their heart and soul to this work. We are so proud to work alongside this board each and every day,” said Oquist. “Their dedication to our kids and to our staff is really unwavering. We are so proud to have Livonia Public Schools school board be designated as an Honor Board in the State of Michigan.”
